Have you started back to school yet? No? I have and I wanted to share with you my most favorite tip for helping my brand new firsties get rid of their first day of school jitters. Are you ready for it? Wait for it……..wait for it…….I bribe them. Yes, I buy their love and affection for a brand new school year with tools for success!

Each year I get students a brand new pencil case and put it in a goodie bag. I love getting them for the kids. Their face just lights up and trust me when I say it is worth every penny. I get them pretty cheap. Not WalMart 97 cents cheap but like I said they are worth every penny. I can get these gems for between $2.00 – $2.50 each. Two dollars for the boys pencil cases and two-fifty for the girls. Of course the little girls’ pencil cases are more expensive than the boys. Product mark up for girls starts so early. But just look at them!
The key to getting these at such a great price is to know where to go. I go to the toy district in downtown LA. I always find my yearly gifts for my kiddos and my treasure box toys there. Your money goes a long way and it is kind of like a swap meet meaning you can negotiate prices.
I do have to warn you. I don’t know how many of you have been to downtown LA but it is VERY close to Skid Row. Not only does it break your heart, but do not go alone. It is always safer to bring a group of your teacher besties. I like to bring the mister and the kids. I have gone for so many years now we know exactly where to park and the stores I like. This way we can get in, get out, and move on to have lunch and family time at the beach.
|Me and my creeps!|
This year after shopping we went to have lunch off of Melrose. We ate at this amazing Argentinian restaurant in West Hollywood called Lala’s Grill. I had never eaten Argentinian food before and I loved it. Another bit of advice, time your trip. Los Angeles is notorious for its traffic. Make sure you are not trying to go on the weekend. You’ll just end up frustrated.
This year I ended up with Ninja Turtles and Tinker Bell cases. I was hoping for Minions but maybe next year. Besides getting rid of jitters, these cases keep my students organized, and they are very quiet. I hate hard cases! I don’t care how cheap they are. They are just too noisy for me.
Once I get my pencil cases, I make goodie bags for my students to open on the first day of school. I usually put a pencil, novelty eraser, a space man, and brand new box of crayons. Each year I have a few new friends with tears. As soon as they open their present from me, even they are smiling. I want my students to know that I care about them and I want them to feel a warm welcome. Every year I have a kiddo who is new to our school, has never been to Kinder, or went to a private school with classes that are much smaller. This always helps with the jitters. Yes, it costs a little bit more but like I said, they are worth every penny!
