Are you ready? Have you started rearranging desks, making copies, or decided which brand new Modern Teacher planner to purchase? I vote for the black and white polka dot planner. (Psst…that’s the one I bought).
For most of you, summer vacation is about to come to an end soon. You are seeing back to school ads everywhere and let me tell you, watch out if you go to Target. All the school supplies are out and we all know that school supplies are like crack for teachers. As for me, I have just finished my first week of the 2015-2016 year. Can you believe that it’s 2015? I was so convinced we would have flying cars by now. Man the Jestsons let me down! Anyway, back to teacher talk. This year I have decided to go with a welcome bulletin board that has a social media twist. Let’s talk selfies, hashtags, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!
Now this may be an old idea for you but it is new to me and I know what you are thinking. Why selfies? Well, it is something that believe it or not most children know and understand. I want them to feel familiar and welcomed as they enter the classroom for the first few weeks. It can be difficult for the little ones. Especially if they are starting over again at a new school or are an English Language Learner. I swear, even my four year old will steal my camera from time to time and shout out, “Let’s take a selfie”!

So, I was thinking about it for awhile and I decided….. why not. The plan was to create a welcome board that the students can participate in creating. This way they feel ownership over part of the classroom and I will have their adorable projects waiting for parents to gush over on Back To School Night.
|Curriculum night is already next weekend for us.|
First, I started off by thinking of a snappy header for the board. I came up with, “Tell Me About Your #Selfie”. So from there I created a getting to know you selfie activity. I went with a template that can be either an iphone or ipad. On one side, there is the space where the actual “selfie” is glued, or drawn with the hashtag first grader. On the back is a list of hashtags for them to fill out all about themselves. Let me tell you, my firsties loved it! They weren’t thrilled about getting homework on the first day of school but that is just how I roll. Just take a peek!

We’ve had so much fun presenting and getting to know one another! Of course I had to slip some listening and speaking standards into this project so each child will be presenting their selfie project to the whole class. This helps us to get to know each other better and allows them to practice their listening and speaking skills.
They are so proud of themselves and most of them are too excited to be center of attention. I just loved this project. It was so much fun. So in the spirit of fun and kicking off the new school year with a bang, I decided to share this project with all of you for free! Just click on the image below and you should be redirected to my beloved Google Docs. All that I ask is for you to please share your class pictures with me. Tag me or use the hashtag #btsselfie (Back to School Selfie). I would love to see how things turn out for your kiddos. You can find me on Instagram at teachwithasmile1 or click the Instagram icon at the top of my blog. Also if you like this freebie please comment below and follow me on social media. I have so many more exciting and engaging ideas to share with you this year.
I can’t wait to see how your selfies turn out! XOXO
